The Strait of Gibraltar is the body of water separating Europe (Peninsular Spain and Gibraltar) from Africa (Morocco and Ceuta), and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The narrowest part of the strait is 14.4 km (shorter swimming section) across, though actual and effective swim distances vary due to cross-currents.
Swim across the Strait of Gibraltar
Strait of Gibraltar swims are organized and sanctioned by the Asociación Cruce a Nado del Estrecho de Gibraltar (ACNEG), based in Tarifa, Spain. The strait was first swum by Mercedes Gleitze (GBR) in 1928, and is one of the Oceans Seven channel swims.
“The first thing you must know before swim across the Strait of Gibraltar is this challenge have experienced a boom over the last few years. Every year, the demand continues to grow and as a result the Gibraltar Strait Swimming Association has had to implement a procurement process,” – says Andrzej Waszkewicz, Gibraltar sports manager.
“Waiting lists can exceed two years. This timeframe will give you the opportunity to get information and train yourself in order to be brilliantly successful and achieve your goal. The event organizer works to reduce these waiting times mixing swimmers and other techniques, so the allocation of dates depends to a large extent on the flexibility of the swimmers” – he adds.
